Making Truffles with a Nokia Lumia 925

Saturday, December 14, 2013

Photos are a big part of having a food blog. Not only do they make your blog look interesting but they also encourage your readers to try your recipes. After all, we do eat with our eyes.

One of the things that sets the Nokia Lumia 925 apart from other mobile phones is its top-of-the-line camera. With a minimum focus range of 8cm, you can get up close to your subjects, making taking food photos with the Lumia fantastic! The camera also produces JPEG photos so you know when you upload them to the cloud, they'll already be in the appropriate format for displaying on your blog. Finally, the burst shutter effect means you'll get the best shot, every time.

I made these easy chocolate truffles and took photos with the Nokia Lumia 925 to display how good of a camera it is:

Chocolate and double or heavy cream is all you need to make classic truffles from www.anyonita-nibbles.com
Truffles are made with chocolate--milk or dark and double cream. You will need a bowl, a candy thermometer, a saucepan half filled with water, cocoa powder and a piping bag.

Tempering chocolate for truffles from www.anyonita-nibbles.com
The first thing you need to do when making truffles is to temper the chocolate. It is best to use a candy thermometer for this as it can be tricky process. When you drizzle the chocolate from the utensil and it sits in ribbons on the surface of the other chocolate, you will know that you have tempered it correctly.

Add some of the double cream to some of the tempered chocolate from www.anyonita-nibbles.com
Once the chocolate has been tempered, you will need to mix in the double cream. Add the cream ...

Combine to make a roux-like batter from www.anyonita-nibbles.com
Stir to combine until a thick roux-like batter is formed.

Fill a piping bag and pipe onto a lined baking tray sprinked with cocoa powder from www.anyonita-nibbles.com

Spoon the mix into a piping bag and pipe mounds onto a silicone mat or paper-lined tray that has been sprinkled with cocoa powder. Shape the mounds into balls. (This would have been much easier if I had had both hands free! Apologies for the wonky-shaped truffles!)

Spoon over the remaining melted chocolate and decorate to your tastes.

Overall, compared to the cameras I've used on other mobile phones, I would say that the Lumia's camera is far superior. It would be the ideal companion for food photography on the go. If you're the type of blogger who likes to capture photos of the food you eat in restaurants to blog later, then I would consider the Nokia Lumia 925.
