Saucy Oven Baby Back Ribs Recipe

These baby back ribs are coated with an easy four-ingredient dry rub and slow cooked and basted with barbecue sauce before serving. Growing up in the south in America, I had my fair share of ribs. In the south, we do ribs. Barbecue isn't just a thing you have when the weather's sunny and the days are long. Barbecue is its own food group down south, with entire towns centering their whole identity around it. Living in a country that doesn't share this culture and that has generally fewer days where a barbecue is even possible because of the buckets of rain and bitter cold, means that I miss the smell of smoke wafting in the air!

When I'm craving a taste for home-cooked barbecue ribs, I generally turn to my oven for assistance. as I mentioned, ManRainchester gives very few prime barbecue days a year and if you have pre-arranged plans, you could  miss the opportunity altogether!

Oven baked ribs tend to get scoffed at in the south. I understand why: unless you use liquid smoke, (which I don't) you just won't get that authentic fire-licked taste that you do from the barbecue grill. But is that the best thing about barbecued meat?

For me, it isn't. The best thing about it is how the meat breaks down after being held close to the flame. It's how the edges char and crisp up and the meat retains its moisture and succulence. I'm not promising that these oven baby back ribs taste just like they would if they were cooked on the grill, because they don't. But they are just as good. They're tender and they're moist and they are a fair alternative when poor weather rains on your parade.

Ingredients:

For the baby back ribs
2 racks baby back ribs

  2. Combine the brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder and a pinch of salt in a bowl.
  3. Rub the spice mix into the ribs so that the ribs are well coated.
  4. Place the ribs on a baking try with the meatiest side facing down. Cover the tray with foil.
  5. Bake 1 1/2 hours. Turn the oven off and put the grill/broiler on instead.
  6. Brush both sides of the ribs with barbecue sauce and place under the broiler for 5 minutes each side until the sauce is bubbly.
